LOIS STORY IN SUPERMAN ANNUAL #2

CloissplashpageSAnn2

Despite the fact, Brainiac is on the cover, Superman Annual #2 is a Lois Lane, investigative reporter story. Spanning five years including when Metropolis was invaded by The Collector (Grant Morrison’s Action Comics), we see some of the residual effects of that event in the present time.

Preview pages of this Scott Lobdell story with art by Dan Jurgens (Death of Superman, creator of Doomsday and Booster Gold) showed a Lois Lane dying from a fall.   Fans were upset as this would be the sixth time a dying or dead Lois has been used in the past two years.   Soap opera much?   Lois has been used as death fodder to help the fauxmance along.

One unusual thing about this annual is that it is not a stand alone.  It is part of a story arc concerning a Psi War.  Lobdell is currently writing both Superman and Action Comics (after Andy Diggle left).   Lobdell probably needed the panel space before Greg Pak takes over Action in #25.

Despite Lobdell’s previous use of narration boxes from some omniscient non-vested entity, we see and ‘hear’ this story from Lois’ perspective.  It appears to be a solid story and hopefully Lobdell can continue this quality throughout this arc.  We just wish Lobdell would quit TELLING us stuff that happened with Clark/Superman and Lois in the five year gap — we’d like to SEE it!

This is the best and truly first time we see Superman come to Lois’ rescue in the new 52.  In fact, it may be the most interaction they have had since the reboot.  Jurgens continues to make us feel what happens between these two ICONIC characters.  (Caps for Didio’s benefit.)

Scott Lobdell has made Lois Lane the mother of her and Clark’s son, Jonathon Kent (from the future) and Connor Kent (Superboy).  In fact, she is Kon’s double mother, in that Connor not only has Jon’s DNA but also another set of DNA from Lois and Clark.  Clark’s was taken when he was tortured by the military in early issues of new 52 Action and Lois . . . we never were told when Harvest (the villain) took her DNA.   Since Superboy has psionic powers, is it possible that Lois’ blood was obtained sometime after the events in this issue?

The Superman books under Lobdell have been a chaotic mess, not only writing wise but also editorially.  DCE definitely has its problems with hodge-podging stories while ‘getting them out on time.’  And with their fierce ‘scrutiny’ of Superman’s story and lack of planning, this makes reading these books . . . painful.

Currently, there are only three Superman related books that give us enjoyment every time.  Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder, Smallville Season 11 by Bryan Q Miller and Adventures of Superman by various creators.  Check them out!

Greg Pak is currently writing Batman/Superman and has included Earth 2 Lois Lane (married to Superman) in the story.  Unfortunately, with the fauxmance bias, readers got panels of Wonder Woman stabbing a Lois.  Pak says he enjoys writing Lois.  Let’s hope he is able to enjoy writing her when he takes over Action in the late fall.

One book we hope that Lois Lane does not appear in is the Superman/Woman Wonder book.  Or better known by fans as, “the book that shall not be named.”  With DCE’s consistent killing of Lois Lane, we can foresee them totally throwing Lois under the bus in this book just to make Diana be the ‘prize winner’ of Superman.  It’s what little boys do when they get together and talk trash about girls.

Will we see more Lois in the future?  Perhaps, but more likely, perhaps not.  In September, there is Villains Month.  The evil ones win the Trinity War (oops, did I say that outloud?) but that’s not all folks.  From October to March we get to see Forever Evil.  (Forever in comic book stories is only 6 months long).  That’s right, if you read superhero comics to see good triumph over evil, save yourself some money and buy Christmas and Valentine presents.  Evil is going to rule the DCU from now on (or at least until tax time).

Is it a coincidence the book that shall not be named kicks off the Forever Evil arc?

Superman needs to get his act together and pursue Lois Lane or the entire world will end . . . period.

DC COMICS TURNS JUSTICE LEAGUE INTO WANKER FARE

Couldn’t fanboys just steal Playboy like the generations before them?

The picture above is from a Superman v2 comic book series called For Tomorrow with Jim Lee as artist.  It is from issue #212 published in late 2004.  This is Superman with his wife, Lois Lane.  Now Lee is telling EW.com that his inspiration for  Justice League #12 cover (written by Geoff Johns) is from  Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss and Alfred Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square photograph.  I call BULLSHIT!

Last year Superman fans were bemoaning the disintegration of the Kent marriage for the new 52.  Jim Lee, Co-Publisher, stated at that time “once we got rid of the marital detail stories started to flow.”   Since that time he has stated that it was always about the triangle for two meaning Superman/Lois/Clark.  Again, I call BULLSHIT!  Basically Lee has replaced Lois Lane with Wonder Woman on the JL12 cover.

Also last year Dan Didio tried to retro Superman’s real life historical timeline by saying the marriage was the result of the Lois and Clark: New Adventures of Superman television show.   Again, BULLSHIT!  Anyone with a computer can Google the REAL facts.

Why so much bullshit?  Because it seems that’s what the big wigs at DC are throwing against the wall to see what sticks.

This year DC Comics has another surprise for Superman fans.  He’s going to be in a status quo relationship with Wonder Woman after what was called in the EW.com interview with Johns and Lee as  flirty foreshadowing.  BULLSHIT!  Unless ‘she’s strong’ and ‘Diana!’ are come ons, then there was no flirting or foreshadowing.  Which is why Lee and Johns waited one week before the book’s release for the ‘controversial’ exclusive.  LIGHTSWITCH BULLSHIT!

My apologies in advance to my male reading cohorts who actually like Superman and his supporting cast and his soulmate, Lois Lane.  This is no way directed towards you.

DC Comics has decided (with very dicey survey results) that their target audience is males 14 to 34 years old. So this may be what they are going after — characters and icon fans be damned.

“The creative team believes the heroes are right for each other. She’s a mythic Amazonian warrior; he’s a veritable demigod. Both have huge hearts for mankind, yet also feel estranged from humanity. Relationships with civilians are tricky for caped crusaders, even liabilities. Usually, they choose to mask their full, true identities and hide their secret, high-risk do-gooding from their lovers to protect them. At least together, Superman and Wonder Woman can be themselves. Oh, and they’re also ridiculously good looking, too.”  — ew.com interview August 22nd, 2012

This is wrong on so many levels.  First off, you get things like this said:

“Superman has found a cervix hardy enough to withstand his ballistic Kryptonian seed. In next week’s issue of Justice League, Superman and Wonder Woman will officially become the DC Universe’s new power couple. Commence the atmospheric diddling!” — io9.com Superman and Wonder Woman Are Officially Doing It.

This is what DC Comics has reduced two of its greatest icons to . . . wank material.  No backstory.  No heartfelt emotions.  Just power sex.  Which might be great for Superman (it really destroys his character) but Wonder Woman will be considered ‘the other woman’  because ask anyone on the street or on the internet — Who is Superman’s girlfriend?  They’ll tell you, LOIS LANE.   And readers know Lois is much more than that.

Humans are considered lesser beings by this powerful couple and DC execs.  But isn’t it humans that buy comic books?  Shouldn’t DC keep the human components involved in their iconic histories for readers to relate to?  No?  Let’s just have power sex.  Wank.

Geoff Johns and Jim Lee later tweeted a link to a Good Morning America clip announcing EW’s exclusive.  Guess what happened?  All around the table who heard the news that Superman is dumping Lois (untrue story wise) said, “NO!”  “I won’t accept that.”  With the additional fact from the JL writers that Wonder Woman has been chasing Superman since 1988.  This is while a photoshopped picture announced Wonder Woman as Superman’s sidekick. Again, BULLSHIT.  Let’s have power sex.

So Wonder Woman is getting trashed for being a homewrecker since most people know the TRUE iconic couple (since 1938) and this places Diana in a bad light.  And sidekick?  Really?  Wonder Woman is far from being a sidekick.  Not good for getting new readers.  It’s publicity, but bad publicity and destroys her character for no reason but to have her and Superman have power sex.  Wankers!

Lois is seen as being dumped.  Actually in the new 52, Lois has been put behind a desk and has a placement within the Daily Planet on the par of Perry White.  She is NOT Clark’s boss even though DC execs have stated she was.  George Perez was originally handpicked by Dan Didio to write the Supes Wondy scenario since he did it previously in 1980s.  It lasted 2 issues back then and Superman and Wonder Woman decided to be friends.  DC apparently put that idea on hold and micromanaged, veteran writer and artist, Perez til he quit the book.  Now Geoff Johns and Jim Lee are going to portray this relationship as THE POWER COUPLE.  But I have a sneaking suspicion that Diana is going to be the Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) of the Justice League.  Again, horrible for her character.  It would show manipulation through sex.  And that’s how we get the Trinity War next summer, boys and girls.

Clark Kent, remember that guy?  Again the human component is being abandoned.  This time for power sex.  Why have a dual identity when you can have power sex with Wonder Woman?  DC Comics has not written much about Clark since before World of New Krypton (WONK) and Grounded.  He’s the alien raised by loving humans which DC seems to detest.  Another character destroyed.

Also amongst all this bullshit is a incoherent timeline for the new 52.  Action Comics written by Grant Morrison was to take place six months before Justice League.  In Action #12, Superman ‘dreams’ of marrying Lois Lane and wishes it were true.  This story is still in the past.  Justice League started 5 years prior to Superman book and came to the present in issue #7.   Superman book started in the present and had Superman and Clark wishing he was with Lois.  So what is up with the new 52 Superman?  What is his story?  Does he love Lois Lane while screwing Wonder Woman?  Really?  How does that give him any credibility?

By the way, the Superman book will be on its third set of creators next month.  The politics behind the books are wreaking havoc.  Matt Idelson, editor over Superman Group books, stated that Clark and Lois weren’t inevitable.  That they wouldn’t happen on his watch.  In Superman #12 Matt Idelson is not listed as editor.  It seems the DC comic book factory is breaking down — and I don’t use that analogy loosely.

So if you want to enjoy the REAL Superman, read Smallville Season 11 by Bryan Q. Miller.  It’s a digital first comic based on the tv series.  Not in the new 52 and Clark and Lois are together — literally in digital issue #13.  Go to OSCK.wordpress.com to see how to buy and download those for 99 cents.  Or you can get 4 print issues (at this writing) for $3.99 each at a comic book store (web or local).  Put it on your pull list. Batman is arriving in Smallville.  It’s the only place World’s Finest fans will get their Superman Batman fix.

Don’t buy Justice League while this bullshit is going on.  It seems DC Comics is hellbent on destroying Superman and now Wonder Woman.  Batman has umpteen books.  Don’t support bad behavior.

Another great Superman book is Superman Family Adventures by Art Baltazar and Franco. It’s a print first comic and also available as a digital.  Not in the new 52.  You’ll really enjoy reading this as will your kids.

Clark Kent, we miss you in the new 52.

Lois, we love you.  Keep on being headstrong, smart, intuitive and searching for truth and justice.  You inspire us and a super man by being the best of humanity.
